The History of Diving Museum at MM 83 continues the free, "Immerse Yourself!" series, to begin at 7 p.m., with a special event: Shipwrecks of the Keys & Underwater Archaeology, presented by Corey Malcom, Director of Archaeology for the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum. The Havana-based Pirate ship, Guerrero, wrecked in 1827 on a reef near the Florida Keys with 561 African captives aboard. The story of the Guerrero includes a tale of ruthless, absconded pirates who rose up against their rescuers, hijacked them and continued their voyage to Cuba. The Museum is open daily from 10am-5pm. Viva 500: The Hidden History of the Dry Tortugas, 1513-2013
On June 21, 1513, explorer Ponce de Leon and his shipmates discovered a group of islands they named Las Tortugas (The Turtles) for the scores of sea turtles there. On the 500th anniversary of that discovery, visit the seven tiny coral-and-sand islands now known as Dry Tortugas National Park,
lying 68 miles west of Key West in the Gulf of Mexico, and learn about the archaeology and history of the remarkable spot during this special quincentennial event.
