Key West in March: Weather, Events, and What to Expect

Somewhere in the first week of March, the Key West wind changes its mind. The winter cold fronts, which have been barging down the peninsula every week or so since December, run out of energy. The north wind gives way to a gentle southeasterly, the water starts warming, and the island settles into the kind of weather that people who live here quietly consider the best of the year. At the same moment, spring break arrives. Key West in March is near-perfect weather wrapped in peak-season crowds, and the difference between a great March trip and a frustrating one comes down to timing and planning.

March weather

March is the month the island warms up without getting sticky. The average high climbs to about 80°F and the average low to about 69°F. Rain is scarce — about five rain days and an inch and a half for the month — and humidity stays comfortable. Sunshine increases sharply compared with winter; March, April and May are the brightest stretch of the year. It is warm enough for the beach every afternoon and cool enough to walk around Old Town all day.

Cold fronts become rarer as the month goes on. An early-March front can still bring a breezy, cooler day or two, but by the second half of the month they are uncommon, and the prevailing wind shifts to a milder easterly or southeasterly breeze. The wind can still be brisk — spring is often breezy in the Keys — which is excellent for kiteboarding and sailing, and occasionally a nuisance for snorkel trips.

The water in March

The sea averages about 73°F across the month, cooler at the start and noticeably warmer by the end. For most visitors, late-March water is pleasant for swimming, especially on sunny afternoons in the shallows at Fort Zachary Taylor or Smathers Beach. Snorkelers who get cold easily will still appreciate a rash guard. As the fronts fade, reef visibility becomes more reliable, and March is often the start of consistently good conditions for snorkeling, diving and the Dry Tortugas ferry.

One thing to keep an eye on: in heavy sargassum years, seaweed can start washing up on the Atlantic-facing beaches from around March or April. It varies enormously week to week. If a beach day is important, check recent local reports shortly before you go.

Spring break in Key West: what it actually means

“Spring break” conjures images of Panama City Beach or Daytona in the 1990s. Key West’s version is different, and much more mixed.

• College students come, particularly in early and mid March, and Duval Street’s bars and Smathers Beach are livelier and louder as a result. But Key West is expensive and far from most campuses, so it never becomes a pure college party town the way some Florida beach towns have.
• Families make up a large and growing share of spring break visitors, especially in the second half of March and around Easter, when many school districts take their breaks.
• Everyone else — snowbirds, couples, retirees — is still here too, which is why the whole island feels busy rather than any one part of it.

Spring break dates vary by university and school district, so there is no single “spring break week.” In practice, the whole of March is busy, with the most crowded weeks usually in the middle of the month and around Easter. In 2027 Easter is on March 28, which pushes many family spring breaks into the last two weeks of March and makes the end of the month especially busy.

Where the spring break crowd goes — and how to avoid it

• Smathers Beach is the main spring break beach — the longest stretch of sand on the island, with volleyball, water sports and a party atmosphere on busy afternoons.
• Duval Street bars, especially at the north end near Sloppy Joe’s and the Front Street end, are packed and loud late into the night.
• For something calmer, Fort Zachary Taylor’s beach is quieter and more family-oriented, Higgs Beach is relaxed, and the side streets of Old Town and the neighborhoods around Truman Annex feel a world away from Duval. March events

Conch Shell Blowing Contest (early March)

Every early March, contestants of all ages gather in the garden of the Oldest House museum at 322 Duval Street to blow conch shells — as loudly, as long, as musically or as ridiculously as they can. There are categories for children, adults, groups and “most unusual sound,” and the results range from mournful foghorn blasts to renditions of recognizable tunes. The 2026 contest, the 63rd, was held on March 7, with registration from 10 a.m. and blowing from noon. It is small, free to watch, very local and one of the most charming hours you can spend in Key West. Look for the 2027 date in early March.

Old Island Restoration Foundation home tours

March is the last month of the winter season of home tours, when a handful of private historic homes and gardens open to visitors on one weekend. St. Patrick’s Day

St. Patrick’s Day falls on Wednesday, March 17, in 2027. Key West does not have a big parade, but the bars along Duval Street go green, and with spring break in full swing, it makes for a busy midweek night.

Tennessee Williams’ birthday

Tennessee Williams, who lived in Key West for more than three decades and wrote much of his later work here, was born on March 26. The Tennessee Williams Museum and local literary groups often mark the week with readings, screenings and events. Check what is planned for 2027.

Easter weekend (March 26–28, 2027)

With Easter falling in March in 2027, the last weekend of the month is one of the busiest of the spring, with families, church services, brunches and a full island. Book early.

Crowds and prices in March

March is peak season, with February, the most expensive time of year to stay in Key West. Demand is driven by perfect weather and spring breaks from colleges and schools across the country.

How to make March work:

• Book very early. For March, four to six months ahead is not excessive, especially for Easter week and popular Old Town inns.
• Travel midweek. Sunday-to-Thursday stays are usually cheaper and quieter.
• Choose your location carefully. A hotel on lower Duval is at the heart of the noise; a guesthouse a few blocks away is not.
• Book restaurants and boat trips ahead. Sunset sails, snorkel trips and the Dry Tortugas ferry fill up.

What to do in Key West in March

Beaches

March is the first month when a beach afternoon feels like a real beach afternoon for most people. Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park has the island’s best combination of sand, shade, clear water and rocky snorkeling spots, and it is a good escape from the spring break crowd. Snorkeling, diving and Dry Tortugas

With calmer weather and warming water, March is the beginning of the best stretch for reef trips. A day trip to Dry Tortugas National Park — 70 miles west by ferry or seaplane, with the vast brick Fort Jefferson and some of the clearest snorkeling in the region — is spectacular on a calm March day. Kiteboarding, sailing and paddling

Fishing

History and museums

The Hemingway Home, the Truman Little White House, the Key West Lighthouse, the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum and Fort Zachary Taylor itself are all busy in March. Visit at opening time, or in the late afternoon when the day-trippers from cruise ships have gone back on board. Inside the fort, the old casemates and their stacks of cannonballs are a cool, shady break from the spring sun.

Nightlife

Spring break is prime time for family trips, and March weather suits children well: warm enough for the beach and the pool, not so hot that everyone is miserable by noon. A few tips:

• Stay away from lower Duval Street, which gets rowdy at night.
• Choose Fort Zachary Taylor over Smathers Beach for family beach days.
• Book family-friendly activities — the Conch Tour Train, glass-bottom boats, the aquarium, the Butterfly and Nature Conservatory — ahead of time.
• Find a hotel with a pool; kids will want to swim every day.

Getting there and getting around in March

Spring break affects the journey as much as the destination.

• Flights. Key West International Airport is small, and flights in March fill early and cost more. Flying into Miami or Fort Lauderdale is often cheaper, but add the drive.
• The drive. The Overseas Highway from Miami takes three and a half to four hours on a good day. On Friday afternoons and Sunday afternoons in March, and on the Saturday before Easter, it can take much longer, especially through Key Largo and Islamorada. Leave early in the morning. • Parking. Old Town parking is scarce and expensive in peak season. If your hotel does not include parking, consider leaving the car behind for the week. See our Key West parking guide.
• On the island. Walk, bike or rent a scooter or electric cart. Bike rentals get busy, so reserve ahead in spring break weeks.

Beyond Key West in March

If you have a car, a day up the Keys is a good way to get away from the spring break crowds for a few hours.

• Bahia Honda State Park, about 37 miles north, has the best natural beach in the Keys. It fills quickly on March weekends; arrive when the gates open at 8 a.m.
• The Marathon Seafood Festival, held in Marathon on March 13–14, 2027, is a bigger, more local-feeling seafood festival than anything in Key West that month.
• The Turtle Hospital and the Seven Mile Bridge in Marathon make an easy half day, with a walk out over the water on the restored old bridge.

What to pack for March

• Shorts, T-shirts, sundresses and sandals
• Swimwear, a cover-up and a rash guard
• A light long-sleeved layer or sweater for breezy evenings and boat trips, especially early in the month
• High-SPF sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses — March sun is strong, and sunburn is the most common spring break injury
• Comfortable walking shoes
• Something slightly dressier for dinner

This is the most common question for spring visitors, and it is a close call.

If you are tied to a spring break week, March is wonderful — book early and plan ahead. If you are flexible, late April usually wins on water temperature, crowds and price.

Is March a good time to visit Key West?

For weather, it is one of the best months of the year: warm, sunny, dry and comfortable, with the water warming up and the winter winds fading. For atmosphere, it is lively and fun.

It is less ideal if you are on a budget, if you hate crowds, or if you are booking at the last minute. In those cases, late April, May or early December offer a better balance.
