Key West in April: Weather, Events, and What to Expect

Ask people who have lived in Key West for twenty years which month they would pick if a friend could only visit once, and a surprising number give the same answer without hesitating. Not February, when the island is packed. Not July, when it is steaming. April. The winter fronts are gone, the summer rains have not started, the sea has warmed up enough to stay in for an hour, and after Easter the crowds and prices begin to ease. Key West in April is the island at its most comfortable, and in 2027, with Easter falling in March, the whole month sits on the good side of that line.

This guide covers April weather and water temperatures, the Conch Republic Independence Celebration and the month’s other events, crowds and hotel prices week by week, what is in season on the water and the plate, the best things to do, what to pack, and the few things that can still go wrong. April weather

April is when Key West’s climate is at its most generous. The average high is about 83°F and the average low about 73°F — warm days and mild, pleasant nights. On average, April has fewer rain days than any other month of the year, and more sunshine than any winter month. Humidity is moderate for most of the month, creeping up in the last week as the island edges toward summer.

Winter cold fronts are very rare by April, and the prevailing wind is a steady easterly or southeasterly breeze. That breeze is a gift on land, keeping the heat comfortable, and occasionally a nuisance on the water, where a brisk day can chop up the reef. Most April days, though, are simply warm, bright and easy.

The water in April

At about 78°F, April water is warm enough for almost anyone to swim comfortably, and it is the month when a lot of visitors notice the difference from winter. Snorkeling is excellent: the water is clear, the winter winds have gone, and you can float over the reef for an hour without getting cold. The Dry Tortugas ferry and seaplane have some of their most reliable conditions of the year.

The one caveat is sargassum. In heavy bloom years, the floating seaweed can begin washing onto Atlantic-facing beaches such as Smathers from around April, and 2026 was forecast to be a heavy year. It varies from week to week and beach to beach; sheltered beaches like Fort Zachary Taylor are usually less affected. If the beach is central to your trip, look at recent local reports before you go.

Why 2027 is a good year for April

Easter is the dividing line in the Key West spring. Before it, spring break families and holiday weekenders keep prices at their peak. After it, demand drops and room rates start falling toward shoulder-season levels. In years when Easter falls in mid or late April, the first half of the month is still very busy.

In 2027, Easter Sunday is March 28. That means the whole of April 2027 falls after Easter, with most spring breaks finished. For anyone with flexible dates, it is an unusually good April: peak-season weather at prices that begin to soften from the first week, and crowds that are lively but manageable.

April events

Taste of Key West (April 5, 2027)

An evening food and drink event at Truman Waterfront Park, running 6 to 9 p.m. in 2027, where dozens of local restaurants serve tastings side by side. It is a good way to sample a lot of the island’s kitchens in one go, and a local favorite. Buy tickets ahead.

Conch Republic Independence Celebration (late April)

On April 23, 1982, frustrated by a US Border Patrol roadblock on the Overseas Highway that was strangling tourism, the mayor of Key West declared the island’s secession from the United States, proclaimed the Conch Republic, surrendered one minute later, and requested a billion dollars in foreign aid. The roadblock came down. The Conch Republic never went away.

Every April, the island celebrates with about ten days of cheerfully absurd events, and it is the highlight of the month:

• The Great Battle for the Conch Republic — a mock naval battle in the harbor, with tall ships and boats firing water cannons and stale Cuban bread at each other while the “Conch Navy” defends the island.
• The World’s Longest Parade — which runs down Duval Street from the Atlantic to the Gulf of Mexico, a distance of about a mile and a quarter.
• The bed race — teams push decorated beds on wheels down Duval Street.
• The drag race — not cars, but drag queens racing in heels down Duval.
• Parties, flag-raisings and a lot of Conch Republic flags.

Key West Songwriters Festival (begins April 28, 2027)

The world’s largest songwriters festival — hundreds of songwriters playing their own songs in bars, restaurants and hotels, many shows free — runs from April 28 to May 2 in 2027. Crowds and prices in April

April is not cheap, but compared with February and March, it offers far better value for the quality of weather you get. The best deals are usually in the middle two weeks of the month and midweek. Restaurants remain busy, especially on weekends, but you will not need to book days ahead for everything as you would in February.

What to do in Key West in April

Snorkel the reef

April is one of the best months of the year for snorkeling: warm, clear water and light winds on most days. Boats run to the reef off Key West daily, and a trip to Sand Key or the Sambos is one of the best half days you can spend on the island. Take the ferry to Dry Tortugas

If you only splurge on one day trip, make it this one, and make it in spring. The calmer seas make the two-hour-plus crossing far more pleasant than in winter, and the water around Fort Jefferson is at its clearest. Book well ahead. See our Dry Tortugas day trip guide.

Go tarpon fishing

April kicks off the peak of tarpon season in the Keys. Huge migratory tarpon — often 80 to 150 pounds — gather in the channels, around the bridges and on the flats, and hooking one is one of the great sportfishing experiences in America. Spend a day at the beach

Warm water and reliable sunshine make April a genuine beach month. Fort Zachary Taylor is the best all-round beach, with shade, snorkeling off the rocks and calmer water. Smathers Beach is longer and livelier. Keep an eye on sargassum reports if you are set on Smathers. See our Key West beaches guide.

Walk Old Town and see the sights

April is still comfortable enough for a full day on foot, especially mornings and late afternoons. The Hemingway Home, the Truman Little White House, the Key West Lighthouse and the Key West Cemetery are all good April outings. Duval Street is busy but far less crushed than in March.

Watch the sunset later

Eat the last of the stone crab

Stone crab season runs until May 1, so April is your last chance of the season. Spiny lobster is closed from April 1 until August, so any lobster you eat is likely frozen or imported. • Day 1: Arrive, walk Old Town, sunset at Mallory Square, dinner in the Historic Seaport.
• Day 2: Morning snorkel trip to the reef; afternoon at Fort Zachary Taylor; evening on Duval Street.
• Day 3: Dry Tortugas day trip; relaxed dinner.
• Day 4: Hemingway Home and the Lighthouse in the morning; bike ride through the side streets; Conch Republic event or Taste of Key West if your dates line up; sunset sail.
• Day 5: Morning tarpon or backcountry fishing trip, or a kayak tour of the mangroves; last key lime pie; depart.

Beyond Key West in April

April is an excellent month to explore the rest of the Keys. The drive is pleasant, the traffic is lighter than in March, and the water everywhere is warm and clear.

• Bahia Honda State Park (MM 37) has the best beaches in the Keys and excellent snorkeling trips to Looe Key.

April for different kinds of travelers

Couples, weddings and honeymoons

April is one of the most popular months for Key West weddings and honeymoons, and it is easy to see why: reliably dry weather for an outdoor ceremony, warm evenings, late sunsets for photographs and fewer crowds than winter. If you are planning a beach or waterfront wedding, the low chance of rain is a real advantage, though popular venues book a year or more ahead for April weekends. Families

With Easter and most spring breaks in March in 2027, April is quieter for families, but anyone traveling with young children who are not tied to school dates will find it close to ideal: warm pool and sea water, sunny days without summer’s heat, and all the family attractions open and less crowded. Divers and anglers

April is prime time for both. Divers get warm, clear water and calm seas for the reef and the wreck of the Vandenberg, and anglers get the start of the spring tarpon run. Getting there in April

With spring break largely over, flights into Key West International Airport are easier to find and often cheaper than in March, though still not cheap. Driving down from Miami is pleasant, with lighter traffic than in March; allow three and a half to four hours, and leave early to avoid afternoon congestion through Key Largo and Islamorada, especially on Fridays. • Light, breathable summer clothes: shorts, T-shirts, sundresses, linen
• Swimwear and a rash guard for snorkeling
• High-SPF mineral sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses — April sun is strong
• A light layer for air-conditioned restaurants and breezy boat rides
• Comfortable sandals and walking shoes
• Something fun for the Conch Republic celebration — costumes and Conch Republic colors welcome

Is April the best time to visit Key West?

For many people, yes. April combines warm, sunny, dry weather, the warmest water of the spring, lower crowds and prices than February and March, great snorkeling and fishing, and one of the island’s most characterful festivals.

The honest caveats:

• It is still not cheap. Prices fall from their peak, but April remains a popular month. Book early for festival weekends.
• Sargassum can affect some beaches. Check reports and favor sheltered beaches if it is heavy.
• Late April gets busy again with the Conch Republic celebration and the start of the Songwriters Festival — fun, but not quiet.
• It is getting warmer. The last week of April can feel humid, especially for visitors from cooler climates.
